Building a Fairer Future for NYC
On February 3, NYU and CUNY convened Building a Fairer Future for NYC, a conversation bringing together leaders from academia, industry, and government to explore how technology and innovation can support a safer and more equitable city. R/AI faculty participated actively in the program. Julia Stoyanovich, Director of the NYU Center for Responsible AI, delivered a keynote and joined the New York AI Exchange panel, while Emily Black a faculty member of the Center, took part in the discussion “Does Progress in AI Lead to NYC’s Economic Development?”
In her keynote, “Responsible AI Beyond the Principles: Building a Regime of Distributed Accountability,” Prof. Stoyanovich discussed how responsibility in AI systems is shared across designers, deployers, policymakers, and institutions. Drawing on real-world examples from city technologies, she emphasized that effective governance requires transparency, education, and clear policy frameworks to ensure that AI systems support the public interest.
