Building a Human-Centered Approach to AI in Engineering Education

On October 2, NYU Tandon hosted AI Across the Curriculum: A Tandon Forum, marking the launch of a school-wide initiative led by R/AI Director Julia Stoyanovich, Associate Dean of AI Initiatives. The initiative has a clear goal: to build a human-centered infrastructure that first assesses what faculty and students need, and then addresses those needs.

The work is participatory by design: the people a policy or course will serve help shape it. In Spring 2026, every Tandon department examined how AI is affecting its courses and developed its own strategy. Across the school, one concern stood out: not cheating, but the loss of learning when students submit correct work they do not understand.

Over the summer, three faculty working groups—Policy, Survey, and Resources—translated departmental strategies into shared tools, including adaptable AI-use policy language, a school-wide student survey, and a repository of teaching materials. Students also joined the deliberation, with 240 students in two pilot courses debating and voting on their own course AI policies.

The forum brought together faculty and students to share these developments, discuss emerging priorities, and help shape the next phase of the initiative. Through presentations, a student panel, and interactive breakout sessions, participants explored how Tandon can respond to AI’s impact on teaching and learning.
